PLAINFIELD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A 62-year-old New Jersey man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for fatally stabbing his girlfriend 94 times in 2011, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday.

Anthony James was convicted of the same crime in 2019, but an appellate court sent the verdict back to trial that same year.

Police found Audrey Tanksley, 48, stabbed to death in the couple’s Plainfield apartment on Sept. 28, 2011 after responding to a call from James.

James claimed Tanksley was the aggressor, and that he was acting in self defense when he killed her, but the County Medical Examiner’s finding that Tanksley had been stabbed 94 times undercut this narrative.

Prosecutors said he stabbed Tanksley with three different knives in an “act of rage.”

He was convicted of murder and weapons charges for the second time in May.
