No active shooter at NJ mall, despite evacuation due to shooting fears: police

PARAMUS, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- The Paramus Police Department said there is no active shooter at the Westfield Garden State Plaza mall in New Jersey after the mall was evacuated on Saturday around 4 p.m. over fears that a shooting was taking place.

Chairs were knocked over during a fight in the food court and shoppers mistook the sound for gunshots, according to the PPD.

Police officers armed with assault rifles patrolled the area, workers and shoppers locked themselves in stores and the mall was evacuated.

Police say the people involved in the altercation that started the chaos left the mall.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
