Off-duty sheriff deputy guns down burglar at Long Island home

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A Long Island homeowner shot a man who was trying to burglarize his home, Suffolk County police said Thursday as they identified the homeowner as a county sheriff deputy.

The break-in occurred around 4 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Maple Wood Lane in Riverhead.

A man tried to enter the house and was confronted by residents, who attempted to stop him, police said.

The man ignored their warnings and was shot once by the homeowner, according to police.

The homeowner is a Suffolk County sheriff deputy who was off duty at the time of the shooting.

The would-be burglar was transported to an area hospital for treatment. His condition wasn't immediately known.

The residents weren't injured.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police said.
