Pickup driver on drugs sparks deadly 3-car crash on Long Island: police

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A man whose driving was impaired by drugs sparked a three-car crash on Long Island Sunday evening that killed a 21-year-old man, police said Monday.

The crash happened on Middle County Road in Centereach at 5 p.m., according to Suffolk County police.

Christopher Guzman, 39, was driving a 2022 Chevy pickup westbound on Middle County Road, near Wood Road, when his truck struck the side of a 2011 Toyota Camry that was headed eastbound.

Guzman continued driving and moments later struck a 2012 Ford Escape headed westbound, police said.

Guzman and the 66-year-old woman driving the Camry suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the 55-year-old man driving the Escape was seriously injured. They were all taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The 21-year-old nephew of the Escape driver was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was identified as Timothy Carpenter.

Guzman, of Farmingville, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.

All vehicles involved were impounded for safety checks, police said.
