JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — The political chess pieces are moving in New Jersey.

Insiders suspect Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop will run for governor now that he has decided not to run for re-election in 2025 after three terms.

"I was for certain over the holidays that this will be my last term," Fulop said. "And you know, I always had the option: I could run for governor, I could run for another office and then still run for mayor because those elections don't coincide. But I would never do that to the residents of Jersey City when it's time to move on."

There's no official decision by the 45-year-old Democrat.

Fulop said he will look at the governor's race, but he might also return to the private sector — he once worked for Goldman Sachs.

For years, Jersey City has seen a development and economic boom, especially downtown.

Critics say working-class people have been priced out of the next race for governor, and speculation abounds.

If he does run, Fulop wouldn’t face fellow Democrat, Gov. Phil Murphy, who is term limited and ineligible for a third consecutive term.

Republican Jack Ciattarelli has said he will run again in 2025 after losing to Murphy in 2021.
