LI thief takes car left running with teen passenger in back

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Officials are investigating a car theft that occurred on Sunday afternoon on Long Island.

According to detectives, at about 1:40 p.m., a woman left her car running in front of 42 W. Merrick Road in Valley Stream after dropping another car off at a mechanic.

An 18-year-old passenger was in the back seat waiting when a man wearing a black mask, black hoodie, and black sweatpants was walking westbound on W. Merrick Road and entered the victims vehicle.

The suspect drove approximately 300 feet eastbound on W. Merrick Road.

After he approached Rockaway Avenue the suspect put the car in park and exited the vehicle and entered an unknown orange to red BMW.

The BMW fled southbound on Rockaway Avenue.

The investigation is ongoing.
