CORAM, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — An alleged Bloods gang member opened fire on a Suffolk County police officer Thursday afternoon, injuring the six-year veteran in the upper thigh, Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said.
Janell Fundervurke, 20, of Coram, was arrested after a standoff inside a home on Norfleet Lane, Harrison said at a press conference. He will be charged with attempted murder of a police officer and robbery in his neighborhood on Tuesday.
Funderburke eventually exited the home, noticed the police presence and fled to Homestead Drive, with the police officer following him.
"The officer, who was in plainclothes, identified himself and ordered the suspect to stop," Harrison said. "The suspect did not comply, and at some point, that man ultimately fired two rounds at our officer."
The officer, who has not yet been identified, was shot around 12:50 p.m.
Tourniquets were applied to the officer, which Harrison said stopped the bleeding, and he was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
