Woman, 80, killed in rear-end crash on NJ Turnpike; man, 59, seriously injured

ELIZABETH, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- An 80-year-old woman was killed ad another injured after a van was rear-ended in the right lane of the New Jersey Turnpike Sunday night, authorities said.

Just before 10:40 p.m. on the outer roadway near Exit 13 in Elizabeth, a van traveling northbound along the New Jersey Turnpike became disabled and was struck from from behind by the cab of a tractor-trailer, officials said.

The vehicle was not towing a trailer at the time of the crash, police said.

Dawn Cole, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police.

Thea 59-year-old man driving the van was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
