MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (WCBS 880/1010 WINS) — Police responded to two separate incidents, a house fire and a domestic dispute, that occurred within 40 minutes of each other on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters responded around 7:05 a.m. to a house fire at 60 Maplewood Ave. The blaze was extinguished, and during a sweep of the home, a 60-year-old woman was found inside.
Sources told WCBS 880 on Tuesday that she was discovered in the basement with four self-inflicted stab wounds.
The woman, the homeowner, announced on her Facebook page that she would be evicted on Monday due to non-payment of taxes, following a years-long court battle to keep the Maplewood home she grew up in.
"I had a feeling she was going to try and kill herself," said her neighbor, Colette Peters. "I really did."
She set up a GoFundMe page in an attempt to save her home, raising $8,000 toward her $100,000 goal.
Police have not confirmed whether the fire was started intentionally or how she was injured, but she was taken to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Meanwhile, 40 minutes later around 7:45 a.m., Maplewood Police responded to a 911 call from a good Samaritan saying that a woman had been injured in the 1600 block of Springfield Avenue.
Officers arrived to find a 50-year-old woman with multiple injuries after "a domestic violence incident between mother and son." She was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The son was taken into custody.
Both incidents remain under investigation, authorities said.
