The Cowboys' season came to a heartbreaking end against the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium six months ago, and on Wednesday, a new season unofficially began a little over 300 miles south in Oxnard, California.

Here are a few notes from the first training camp practice of the 2023 season:

Dan Quinn has clearly been itching to get back on the field, as he was even more animated and vocal than the energetic, jovial Cowboys defensive coordinator already is.

It was great to see Terence Steele on the field and taking reps, even if it was in a very light practice. Steele has worked incredibly hard to rehab from the torn ACL in his right knee. There was a large brace on his knee, but he looked smooth and comfortable moving in his reps at right tackle.

The Cowboys came out of the practice with a few bumps and bruises. Donovan Wilson sustained a leg injury, which saw him disappear into the medical tent for a few minutes, before being carted off the practice field. Wilson got on the cart under his own power. ESPN's Todd Archer reports that Wilson is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Israel Mukuamu also left the practice field early, returning a few minutes later in sweats, and with a noticeable limp. The Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken reported that Mukuamu left practice as a precaution when he felt his hamstring tighten up.

Dak Prescott was the victim of another tipped pass interception. Simi Fehoko let a ball slip right through his hands, which was then intercepted by rookie Eric Scott. Scott, by the way, has several fans among Cowboys brass, and there’s a belief within the building that he’ll be a steal for them in the 6th round.

The play of the day may have come from WR Jalen Moreno-Cropper, a rookie undrafted free agent out of Fresno State, who made a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch in the corner of the end zone during 7-on-7.

Deuce Vaughn had a few fans oooing and ahhing during an open-field pursuit drill that saw him break the ankles of a couple of defensive backs.
