The Cowboys are bringing back an under-the-radar talent in pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. on a one-year deal, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports. The contract terms are unknown.
Fowler appeared in all 17 games last season for the Cowboys, recording six sacks, seven tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits. He also forced two fumbles and defended two passes. With Fowler and safety Donovan Wilson set to return, the Cowboys' entire pass-rushing unit, which finished tied for third in the NFL last season with 54 sacks, will remain intact. Linebacker Anthony Barr is the only player to record a sack last season (1) that's not currently on the Cowboys roster.
Fowler had an up-and-down career after being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft. After three seasons in Jacksonville, Fowler spent two seasons each with the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons.
Fowler's biggest draw to Dallas came in the form of defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, whom he played under in Atlanta and at the University of Florida.
In 108 career games, Fowler recorded 41 sacks, 51 tackles for loss, 68 QB hits, 12 forced fumbles, and 16 pass breakups.
