The crowds are just bigger in Texas, apparently.
Hours after the Texas Rangers announced that they would allow max capacity at Globe Life Field to open the season, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that he believes that the team will have AT&T Stadium full for the 2021 season.
"We're gonna have that stadium full, and we're gonna do it safely," Jones said at a press conference where the team announced Dak Prescott's new contract.
For the record, AT&T Stadium - affectionally referred to as "Jerryworld" - seats 80,000, and that's before taking into account standing room admissions. To most, the idea of packing that many people into a stadium currently doesn't sound like an especially smart idea.
That said, the 2021 NFL season won't begin until Sept. 9, when the world figures to look very differently than it does currently. President Joe Biden has said that anyone who wants to be vaccinated will be able to at least get their first dose of one of the three COVID-19 vaccines (Johnson & Johnson's shot is only one dose) by the end of May. Whether the CDC will recommend filling one of the largest venues in America come September is unclear, though it stands to reason that it will be much safer to do so than it would be currently.
The Cowboys, far and away, led the NFL with an average of 28,187 fans at each home game in 2020. Still, that's not even half of the capacity of their stadium. Last weekend, Texas governor Greg Abbott altogether lifted the public mask mandate in the state. It's unclear if the Cowboys will require fans that attend to wear a mask.
