Pens 1st free agent signing—a goalie

Team gets a veteran to compete with Jarry and DeSmith

CRANBERRY TWP, PA. (93.7 The Fan) – Of the scenarios where the Penguins could use their precious little salary cap money left, adding a goalie was not really on the radar. The team’s first free agent move was just that.

Veteran Dustin Tokarski signs a team-friendly deal of $775,000.

The 32-year-old is coming off a career-high 29 games with the Sabres.  He went 10-12-5 with a 3.27 goals against average and .899 save percentage.  The 2008 fifth-round pick by the Lightning had a previous career-high of 17 games with Montreal with a .910 save percengage and 2.75 goals against average.  Overall-76 games, 22 wins, .902 save percentage and 3.14 GAA.

He’s 6’, 198 pounds and a lefty catch who has played for the Lightning, Canadians (5 playoff games in 2014), Anaheim and the Sabres.  Tokarski has played parts of 12 seasons in the AHL with 10 difference teams with a lifetime 2.50 GAA and .912 save percentage with 27 shutouts in the minors.  He’s had a few of his better games against the Pens with a couple wins, a .928 save percentage and 2.84 GAA.

A goal-medal winner with Team Canada at the 2009 World Junior Championships, he also won a WHL championship and Memorial Cup.

Tokarski joins starter Tristan Jarry as Pens goalies on one-year contracts this season.  Casey DeSmith signed a two-year deal July 5.
