Pirates add solid bat at first base with free agent signing

According to a report, the Pirates have signed free agent first baseman Ryan O’Hearn to a two-year contract.

MLB Insider Robert Murray and 93.7 The Fan's Dan Zangrilli says it’s a deal worth $29 million over the next two years with “$500k in performance bonuses in each season.”

The 32-year-old hit .281 in Baltimore and San Diego last season with 63 RBI, 17 home runs and an OPS of .803.

The left-handed hitter can also play outfield.

O’Hearn was traded from the Oriels to the Padres last season at the deadline along with outfield Ramon Laureano for six minor league players.

O’Hearn is the first multi-year free agent deal for the Pirates since pitcher Ivan Nova about a decade ago.

O’Hearn has a career .252 average with 84 home runs, 313 RBI and OPC of .743.

After the signing of Brandon Lowe, Poni and Mueller praised the deal saying General Manager Ben Cherington continues to make the team better with his offseason moves.

“If you’re talking about wins above replacement, the Pirates have added six more wins compared to last year,” said Chris Mueller.
