PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates went with an established college catcher in the first round, with the first pick in the second round of the MLB Draft selecting the high ceiling high school player.
Left-handed pitcher Anthony Solometo from New Jersey, but just over the border from Philadelphia. He is 6’3”, 218 pounds with a funky, three-quarters delivery. His throwing motion is like Madison Bumgarner, almost like something you would see in black and white highlights from baseball’s olden days.
Solometo ranked as the 17th best player in the draft heading into last night.
According to MLB.com, Solometo doesn’t do anything unbelievably well. He also has no weaknesses with a 94 mile-an-hour fastball with an outstanding slider and outstanding control. In 2021, Solometo went 5-0 with a 0.21 ERA with 64 strikeouts to 5 walks in 32.2 innings.
Solometo mocked to go to the Yankees with the 20th overall pick by CBS Sports a few days ago. He is a North Carolina recruit who moved up the boards this year.
