PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He hasn’t been cleared yet, but Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers could play Sunday in Chicago. Head coach Mike Tomlin went through what has to happen for Rodgers to be able to go with what he said was a fracture in his left wrist that doesn’t require surgery.

Doctors are currently working with Rodgers to fit him with a brace. They are attempting to find the right apparatus that can stabilize the wrist, make sure he can protect himself, especially as he falls. They need to make sure he can tolerate the pain, but Tomlin notes that doesn’t seem to be an issue for Rodgers, as he wanted to come back in the game against Cincinnati.

So, it’s currently about finding the best brace, testing it and then the biggest variable for the group.

“How effective he can be?” Tomlin said.

Rodgers won’t practice on Wednesday and Tomlin threw out that Friday could be the day they know about his status. That is the last on-field practice work for Sunday’s game. It’s not required that he practice given his experience, but Tomlin said it’s better for the team, what he referred to as the ‘functionality’ component. So, while Tomlin said he doesn’t need it for his comfort, it appears if Rodgers doesn’t practice on Friday, he won’t play Sunday.

The Steelers head coach seemed fairly forthright with the information he has, admitting he doesn’t have a lot of answers as of Tuesday afternoon, but they should get clarity throughout the week.

Starting on Wednesday, the game plan will center around Mason Rudolph. Then later in the week they will take a look at how Rodgers is progressing. Tomlin said the 41-year-old is ‘working his tail off’ to be ready.

Tomlin said the decision has nothing to do with playing at Soldier Field, where Rodgers is 11-3 in his career and 24-5 overall against the Bears, it’s that Rodgers has a love affair with football.

We will all seem to find out more as the week progresses.
