LATROBE, PA (93.7 The Fan) – Mike Tomlin said it was a day of teaching and learning as the Steelers opened training camp Thursday opening at St. Vincent College. Tomlin said it was a lot of ‘broad sweeping’ drills.
Injuries
No injuries, but tight end Rodney Williams had issues with the heat. Tomlin warned that availability is a big component to making the team for the undrafted tight end from UT-Martin. Williams is in his second season with the Steelers.
Several of the veteran players got plays off including safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, Tomlin said it was a combination of maintaining for the older guys and opportunities for some players working to make the roster. Duke Dawson, a third-year corner out of Florida, got a number of reps with the first team, but Tomlin warned.
“Don’t look too much into what groups people are running with at this juncture, you are going to lead yourself down a bad path,” Tomlin said. “I wasn’t involved in the discussion as to who we sent out first because I really didn’t care. We are just trying to get to know people and we are going to continue to roll.”
“Don’t pay too much attention to the depth at this juncture, just being honest.”
A few first for the start of Training Camp:
