PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – A lot of smiles during Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson’s weekly media gathering on Thursday. He said he is definitely ramping up his work and doing more and more every day.
“Been able to hop into team drills and get more plays, to be able to do that has been great this week,” Wilson said. “Doing all the team 11-on-11, also 7-on-7, all that stuff too. It’s been good.”
He said he continues to listen to the doctors and feels like he’s had a really good week. He said he and the team had a really good practice Thursday and he still has more time with a practice on Friday.
“I feel strong,” Wilson said. “I feel confident. I love the process that we’ve been in, in terms of making sure that I’m fully ready to go. I feel like I’m right there. My mindset is to get ready for Sunday.”
What he would be able to do on Sunday is still in question. The most likely potential to be the back-up quarterback against Dallas. It would seem unlikely that he could unseat Justin Fields this week.
“Every week I’ve been ready to go in some for or fashion in case of emergency or whatever,” Wilsons aid. “That’s been my mentality, making sure that if something happens to be ready and help us win. That’s always the case, finding a way to help us win.”
“Justin has done a great job. Our team has too and guys have been battling. I feel confident in who our football team is.”
Wilson said he’s found ways to lead while he is out. He said he’s been doing his part, whether that’s helping Fields or something else.
“I’m excited about where we are, but we haven’t done anything yet,” Wilson said. “We are 3-1, but we feel like we could be 4-0. We also feel like there are some things to clean up and we can get better as a team, as an offense.”
He wants to be ready when the time is right. When that will be? Wilson said he’s played a lot of football. Neither he nor offensive coordinator Arthur Smith would say how long it would take for him to be ready to potentially start or compete for that role.
Bottom line from Thursday, Russell Wilson is getting closer.
