Christine's Book Club August pick — Drowning by TJ Newman — is a thriller that is leaving readers feeling like the book should come with its own oxygen mask!

Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes, flooding the plane. With twelve passengers trapped inside, those still alive desperately close the doors, but it's too late. The plane sinks to the bottom, leaving Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon struggling for survival, waist-deep in water more than two hundred feet below the surface.

Their only hope lies with an elite rescue team led by professional diver Chris Kent, Shannon's mother and Will's soon-to-be ex-wife. To save their daughter and the trapped passengers, they must work together and navigate the challenges of the undersea environment, with time and air running out.

Christine Lee had a chat with Annie Philbrick, the owner of Bank Square Books in Mystic, about "Drowning," written by TJ Newman, a former flight attendant who knows her stuff when it comes to airplanes. Newman already wrote another fantastic book called "Falling," and both of them have been optioned to become movies.

Annie couldn't stop raving about the book, saying that TJ Newman's inside knowledge about planes and the way she describes the details of what happens during a crisis keeps you glued to your seat. She knows all about how the air works inside the plane, how water would seep in, and where you could enter the plane if you were part of a rescue operation. It's no wonder you can't put the book down until you've read the last page!

But hey, if you're thinking of taking this book on your next flight, Annie suggests waiting until you're at least an hour into the journey and no longer flying over water!
