Emojis aren’t just fun littler additions to text messages anymore; people actually communicate with them!

This thought in mind led to a judge in Canada ruling against a farmer, stating he violated the terms of the contract which were legally bound because the farmer sent the buyer a “thumbs up” emoji!

In 2021, a representative for a company trying to buy grain sent a mass text message to 100 farmers looking for a supplier.  The farmer in question, Chris Achter, began negotiations with the buyer, who sent Achter a contract and asked him to “please confirm” he received it.

Achter sent him the “thumbs up” emoji to say he received the contract, but hadn’t read it yet.  Achter ended up not delivering the grain, so the company sued him.

His lawyer argued that emojis can mean different things, but the judge ruled that emojis are a "non-traditional" and "VALID" signature, and ruled in the company’s favor.

Per Business Insider, Achter is now on the hook for over $61,000 in damages, plus interest!
