Advent calendars are getting crazy.

For many Americans, unveiling a new treat from their advent calendar each day until Christmas sparks joy.

Traditionally, the treats were small and straightforward, but no more. In 2022, advent calendars have gotten quite the makeover.

Man Crates offered two exclusive beef jerky calendars for $89.99, each filled with 25 half-ounce packages of beef jerky bits.

"Help him countdown to Christmas with a daily dose of tasty meats," the company said. "Nothing says 'Meaty Christmas' like an advent calendar filled with 25 festive flavors of beef and exotic jerky. It's a carnivore’s ultimate countdown 'til Christmas."

Beauty advent calendars were huge this year, with some offering different makeup products each day and others filled with a variety of the same items. NYX had a 24-day calendar with a variety of mini makeup products for $65, OPI sold a calendar full of mini nail polish bottles for $79.94, Kiehl's had a skincare calendar with sample-size products for $105, and NARS had a 12-day calendar filled with full-size lip products for $250.

There were several advent calendars filled with mini candles, including a 12 piece set from FORVR Mood for $75 featuring limited-edition scents from its new Apres Ski collection, or a 12 Days of Christmas calendar with a dozen 4-ounce candles for $99.95 from Crate & Barrel.

Marijuana even found a way to advent calendars this year, with Budmail 420 offering a calendar filled with edibles, pre-rolls, grams of flower and cannabis accessories, ranging from $200 to $500 (depending on contents).

Some calendars were beyond pricey. Dior has been trashed for its $3,500 advent calendar filled with items like sample-sized soaps, perfumes and a candle lid. To be fair, Dior did list all of the items included in the calendar on its website, so those who shelled out the cash knew what they were in for. The most "exceptional piece" of the calendar is in drawer 24: a perfume-scented ornament.

Dior described the ultra-limited edition calendar as "a stunning piece, made up of a wooden structure lined with cotton canvas and featuring sketches by Pietro Ruffo... Much more than an advent calendar, this marvelous, miniature universe is ready to welcome your precious objects and elevate your interior."

Swarovski also offered an $800 advent calendar filled with 25 "expertly cut crystal creations." The jeweler said the ornaments, figurines and magnets could be used to adorn a festive table or tree, or presented on an ornament stand.

Last year, Chanel's $825 advent calendar was skewered for including cheap items like stickers and string bracelets. The company said the calendar was designed as a limited-edition item to honor the 100th anniversary of Chanel's No.5 perfume. It looked like a Chanel perfume bottle and quickly sold out.

"This controversy is a bit of a shame because it was not what Chanel intended. Chanel thought it would please some of its customers by offering this type of product. Evidently, we see that you have to be careful and therefore, in future, we will certainly be much more cautious," Bruno Pavlovsky, president of the French fashion house, told Women's Wear Daily.
