Pistons keep Jerami Grant – for now – with 'comfortability moving forward'

Jerami Grant isn't going anywhere -- at least for the next few months.

After fielding interest from several teams in the weeks, days and hours ahead of Thursday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, Troy Weaver and the Pistons opted to hang onto Grant, a 27-year-old scorer who could be a key piece of the team's future.

The two sides have been a good match since Grant signed a three-year, $60 million last offseason and proved his worth with a bigger offensive role and 'have comfortability with each other moving forward,' per Shams Charania.

Of course, Grant could also be trade bait for the Pistons at the draft in June, where he could have an even wider market of suitors. He's not a natural fit within Detroit's core of first- and second-year players and he's in line for a four-year extension worth over $100 million this summer.

Weaver was reportedly seeking two first-round picks or a first-rounder and a promising young player in exchange for Grant, and clearly wasn't willing to budge. By retaining Grant for now, he still has all options on the table.

Grant had a breakout season in 2020-21 when he averaged 22.3 points in 54 games and finished second to Julius Randle for the NBA's Most Improved Player award. His production and efficiency is down this season, though he's still Detroit's leading scorer with 19.1 points per game.

He recently returned from seven-week absence due to a thumb injury, which may have impacted his trade value near the deadline.

The Pistons did pull off one trade Thursday, acquiring 22-year-old big man Marvin Bagley III from the Kings.
