McKEES ROCKS (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Another big step toward development of a former brownfield site in McKees Rocks. Speedway broke ground on a $5.6 million commercial fueling station at the site of the new CSX Intermodal Transportation Terminal along Island Avenue.
Speedway will include five commercial fueling lanes, 18 dedicated tractor-trailer parking spaces, a convenience store and fast-casual restaurant. The new store is expected to be finished by September.
“McKees Rocks is now realizing the development dividends of CSX’s $70 million investment,” said Craig Rippole of Trinity Commercial Development. “The marketability and development potential of the remaining acreage is unmatched.”
To date the former P&LE brownfield has received more than $2.7 million in state funding to assist with development. In March, State Senator Wayne Fontana secured a $275,000 Multimodal Transportation Fund grant to start construction on a second entrance to the terminal.
CSX opened the terminal in 2017. Rippole says it’s using just ten percent of capacity. Thirty-two acres remain for development. He believes synergies built into the project can save 15 percent on transportation costs for products shipped more than 500 miles.
