There's nothing more quintessentially summer than a BBQ. That smell of charcoal burning, burgers sizzling on the grill, smoke billowing through the air. Hungry yet? We are.
But here's the thing, outside of the burgers, dogs, chicken, sausage, and whatever else you throw on the flames – there's always that single, sad, frozen veggie patty reserved for your vegetarian friend.
I mean, can't we do a little better, guys? Surely it's possible to create delicious, plant-based eats that will satisfy herbivores and carnivores alike?
The answer is yes – and we’ve got you covered friends. Here are some tips for serving mouthwatering, meatless options at your next BBQ.
To Impossible and Beyond.
No offense to the frozen food aisle, but Impossible Meat and Beyond Burgers are on another level. For starters, they cook, smell, and taste like real burgers. In fact, I dare you to secretly serve these meatless burgers to your friends and see if they can tell the difference. Plus, they are easy on the environment and available at most local grocery stores.
Make room for mushrooms.
Portobello mushrooms are super versatile. You can brush them down with salad dressing and throw them on the grill. You can stuff them with veggies or cheese and roast them. You can even dice and fry them with provolone cheese to create a Philly "cheesesteak."
Seitan made me do it.
Seitan is pure wheat gluten that contains 100% protein. But science-y stuff aside, it has a surprisingly meaty taste and texture. Our pro tip: grill or fry them and then douse with buffalo sauce. You can thank us later.
Caul-it versatile.
You can use cauliflower for just about everything. Mash it to make low-carb mashed "potatoes." Bread and roast them to make buffalo "wings." But for the purposes of your BBQ, we suggest slicing them into 1-inch steaks and throw them on the grill. When seasoned right, you'll get a beautifully charred, delicious meal.
