College basketball betting often provides unique opportunities for sharp bettors, especially when public money floods one side of a line. Tonight’s slate features several intriguing matchups where the books appear to be baiting bettors into traps. By identifying these spots and leveraging contrarian logic, we’ve pinpointed three standout plays: Clemson vs. Kentucky, Louisville vs. Ole Miss, and Michigan vs. Wisconsin.
Let’s break down why these games offer sharp value and how the public betting trends align with these picks.
NCAAB - Clemson (7-1) +1.5 vs. #4 Kentucky (7-0): -108, DraftKings
There are several matchups in college basketball that I like today, with a bunch of very fishy lines that scream public trap from the top of their lungs. Of course, these could also be sharp traps, but generally the books are offering these numbers so more money will go to one side, practically begging you to take a certain team. In this case, that team is Kentucky, who the books would love for you to bet at this small number.
The Wildcats are undefeated at 7-0 this season, and ranked No. 4 in the country right now. As a blue blood program, they already get bet a lot in the market because of their prestige in college basketball, but this line is criminal. Sure, Clemson is 7-1 this season, but they aren’t ranked in the top-25, and they do have a loss on their schedule. Square bettors will almost always back the ranked team at this kind of number, under a single basket, no matter the situation. This number is designed to draw in money towards the ranked team.
There is no reason it should be basically a pick ‘em, so give me Clemson here, as I think they are probably going to win this game. 88% of the handle is on Kentucky ML, and 78% is on Kentucky spread.
NCAAB - Louisville (5-2) -3.5 vs. #23 Ole Miss (6-1): -106, FanDuel
Here is yet another example of a college basketball line where the books are trying as hard as they can to generate money on one side of a matchup. Unranked Louisville, who comes in off a loss to Oklahoma, is a -3.5 favorite against No. 23 Ole Miss. Granted, the Rebels also just lost in their last game against Purdue, but it was a nailbiter 80-78 defeat. Once again, if a ranked team is an underdog to an unranked team, it is the sportsbook trying as hard as possible to rake in cash on the obvious side.
They are succeeding here, as 75% of the handle is on Ole Miss ML at +136 odds, and 74% of the handle is on the Rebels at +3.5. A public underdog is never something that I am interested in betting, and would gladly bet the opposite every time. Plus, the Cardinals just lost Kasean Pryor to a torn ACL, who was third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. Yet, they are still favorites here against a ranked team?
Louisville lost 77-55 at home to Tennessee earlier this year, which again, people are going to see and want to fade them. There is little reason why this spread is as large as it is, which is why I am taking it and fading the mountain of cash on Ole Miss.
NCAAB - Michigan (6-1) +3.5 at #11 Wisconsin (8-0): -115, BetMGM
Finally, I’m backing the Wolverines as a small underdog tonight against undefeated 8-0 Wisconsin. The Badgers are ranked No. 11 in the country, and off the heels of some success last season in the Big-10, they are once again starting the season on fire. Michigan still has a bad reputation after their terrible season last year, and how badly Juwan Howard screwed up the program. New coach Dusty May has come in and made them competitive again right away, and they are 6-1 to start the year.
Once again, just look at this line and tell me the books aren’t begging you to bet Wisconsin. The Badgers are undefeated at 8-0, ranked No. 11, and at home here. Yet, they are just barely over a possession favorite against unranked Michigan. Some places are down to -2.5 now, and that is despite 86% of the cash being on Wisconsin spread. That tells me that some serious respected money is on the Wolverines tonight.
I think they will win outright, but I’ll take the +3.5 if they are going to give me a full possession.
