Worst Take Ever? Joey Galloway Suggests Indiana Bench Kurtis Rourke vs. Ohio State

Joey Galloway’s proposal to bench Indiana’s starting QB against Ohio State draws criticism and raises questions about playoff strategy.

For the undefeated Indiana Hoosiers, the latest College Football Playoff rankings brought little drama. Curt Cignetti’s squad, fresh off a bye week, held steady at No. 7 in the rankings announced Tuesday night on ESPN. They trail three fellow Big Ten teams: Oregon (No. 1), Ohio State (No. 5), and Penn State (No. 6).

But this weekend could change everything. The Hoosiers head to Columbus for their biggest game of the season, a showdown against the Buckeyes with major playoff implications.

Indiana’s relatively soft schedule has fueled debates among analysts. Some believe a blowout loss to Ohio State could knock the Hoosiers out of playoff contention entirely, while others think their undefeated record has already secured them a spot in the expanded 12-team field.

Then there’s ESPN analyst and former Ohio State star Joey Galloway, who offered a more controversial idea.

"Honestly, if we believe in what our metrics are saying, if I’m Indiana, I don’t know if I’m playing (Kurtis) Rourke against Ohio State," Galloway said during Tuesday night’s reveal show. "We saw what happened to Florida State last year with Jordan Travis. What can keep Indiana out of this? Get your quarterback hurt.”

Galloway’s point is valid, drawing the comparison to last year’s Florida State team, whose playoff hopes were ruined after their weak schedule and the injury to quarterback Jordan Travis left the committee unconvinced.

It’s an interesting angle—but also one that’s hard to take seriously.

If Indiana’s first true test results in a blowout loss, it might indeed lead the CFP committee to question the legitimacy of their resume. However, benching their starting quarterback to avoid exposure—or injury—is a defeatist mindset. If you’re afraid to show who you really are, do you even deserve to be in the playoffs?

This is Indiana’s first-ever 10-0 season. Do we really think they’d sit back and play it safe instead of giving everything they’ve got in the biggest game in program history? Opportunities like this are rare for a program like Indiana. While Cignetti has done an incredible job building the Hoosiers into a contender, there’s no guarantee they’ll be back in the playoff conversation next season. Why throw away the chance to make a real statement now?

And let’s not forget the possibility that Indiana’s “true identity” is actually that of a really good football team, capable of pulling off a monumental upset against a Big Ten powerhouse. If that’s the case, they’ll need their starting quarterback, Rourke, leading the charge.

So, while Galloway’s take might spark debate, it also misses the bigger picture: teams don’t reach this point in the season by playing scared. The Hoosiers have a chance to make history, and they owe it to themselves—and their fans—to leave it all on the field in Columbus.
