Call them Guardians.
Vice President Mike Pence announced that members of the U.S. Space Force will be called Guardians Friday during an event at the White House marking its one-year anniversary.
“We just returned from the Oval Office and so it is my honor, on behalf of the President of the United States, to announce that henceforth the men and women of the United /states Space Force will be known as Guardians,” he said.
The Space Force is the nation’s newest service branch and the first to be established since the Air Force was founded in 1947.
The Space Force also tweeted about the name on Dec. 18.
“Guardians is a name with a long history in space operations, tracing back to the original command motto of Air Force Space Command in 1983, `Guardians of the High Frontier,’” Space Force explained in a release.
Pence also praised Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond for his leadership of Space Force. Pence added that Col. Mike Hopkins, who is currently aboard the International Space Station, transferred from the Air Force to the Space Force earlier in the day.
