Several bills before Congress will have a big impact on veterans

Currently there are 17 pending bills in Congress which would impact veterans and veterans issues, ranging from mental health, cancer treatment, dental care, and modernizing medical facilities.

The Veterans’ Prostate Cancer Treatment and Research Act is one such bill, which would improve early identification and treatment for veterans who may have prostate cancer, a subject that affects hundreds of thousands of veterans.

The Reach for Veterans Act would update training and procedures for calls responders on the veteran crisis hotline. The bill would also include key oversight functions that would look at how effective the hotline is and what can be done to improve procedures in the future.

MAMMO for Veterans Act is aimed at improving mammography for veterans to, "develop a strategic plan to improve breast imaging services, create a telemammography pilot program for veterans in areas where VA does not offer in-house mammography, and expand veterans’ access to clinical trials through partnerships with the National Cancer Institute" a Committee on Veterans Affairs press release states.

The Veterans Dental Care Eligibility Expansion and Enhancement Act expands the type of services that veterans who have been exposed to radiation or toxic substances can receive.

The Servicemembers and Veterans Empowerment and Support Act of 2021 provides critical support for servicemembers who have experienced Military Sexual Trauma (MST). The bill would modify the burden of proof needed for servicemembers who have experienced MST to access VA healthcare services.

The Senate Committee for Veterans Affairs recently discussed these bills during a hearing and posed questions to representatives from Veterans Affairs and Veterans Service Organizations.
