An anonymous donor has stepped up to help a nonprofit organization provide even more eligible military and veteran families with children’s toys and grocery gift cards this holiday season.
COVID-19 and the economic instability it has caused has left more military families than normal in a situation of need this holiday season, according to Soldiers’ Angels. The non-profit organization is encouraging families to sign-up to be a recipient of its Adopt-A-Family program.
The program is open to families of deployed service members; families of post 9-11 wounded, ill and injured service members; and veteran families enrolled in HUD/VASH, who must work with their case manager to apply. Selection for the program is need-based, as determined by Soldiers’ Angels representatives.
Soldiers’ Angels CEO and President Amy Palmer said the “list is long” for the additional hardships service members and their families face this year.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tens of thousands of our National Guard members and Reservists have been activated and deployed around the country in support of COVID operations,” she said. “For our troops overseas, due to COVID travel bans, restrictions and quarantines, deployments are longer.”
That means families are apart longer, Palmer continued.
“Spouses are facing higher than normal unemployment with the shutdown or cutbacks having to be made by so many businesses,” she added.
To review eligibility requirements and to register for the program, go here. Registration deadline is Dec. 7.
Last year, the program supported 908 military and veterans families and 2,511 children.
