OAKLAND (KCBS RADIO) – Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong announced that two officers are now under investigation after a sideshow turned into a car chase and ended with the killing of a person unrelated to the case.

"We identified potential misconduct," said Armstrong in an update on Wednesday. "Very serious potential misconduct within our investigation."

"And that's led to the additional administrative leave," he added.

At the sideshow early Sunday morning, the two officers in question began chasing a suspect, Arnold Linaldi. Linaldi was going nearly 100 miles an hour, in the designated bus lane.

The chase ended with Linaldi crashing his car, killing a bystander, Lolomanaia Soakai, and injuring three others.

Armstrong announced on Monday that the department was investigating the incident and had put the two officers involved in the chase on administrative leave.

But later in the week, he took things a step further, stripping two officers of their duties, one on Monday, the second on Tuesday.

"The additional information shows some irregularities and discrepancies," said Armstrong.

"It's always sad when you see someone lose their life," he said. "That's the first thing. But the second thing is that you want to make sure that your officers were doing what they were supposed to do – that they're following policy and following the law."

"We want to make sure that officers are held accountable if they did not follow policy," he added.

This case is being investigated by OPD Homicide Division, OPD Internal Affairs Division, and the Oakland Community Police Review Agency (CPRA), and the department is cooperating with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
