Topping the rainfall totals at 5 a.m., Mill Valley in Marin County received .31 inches of rain while other regions of the Bay received .01 to .17 inches, the National Weather Service reported. Despite the minor rainfall, any precipitation is warmly welcomed to the area that has faced predominantly dry weather since January.
The rain was brought by a cold front that swept in from the Pacific Ocean. "Amounts will generally be a trace to few hundredths at best," NWS weather experts wrote in a Twitter post.
Due to the cold front, a record low temperature of 30° F was recorded at Half Moon Bay. The previous record for March 12 was 35° F in 1997, 1990 and 1951.
Joining the sparse rainfall, rain is expected to be back in the Bay Area as soon as Monday, brought in by a low pressure system.
"The Bay Area is around 6-12 inches below average, with departures of 5 to 10 inches for the Central Coast. Next shot for light rain is Mon-Tue. Not a lot but we'll take what we can get," NWS wrote.
