Since Tuesday, the Hayward Police Department has been looking for missing 8-year-old, Sophia Mason. The Merced home where the body was found is assumed to be the location where the missing girl was staying with her mother, Samantha Johnson, authorities revealed in a press release Saturday.
Johnson was arrested on Thursday after she gave police suspicious information about where her daughter was. Her statement led police to get a search warrant for the Merced home where her boyfriend, 34-year-old Dhante Jackson, lives.

"He's a person of interest. There's a warrant out for his arrest for homicide," Merced police spokesman, Lieutenant Joey Perez, said.
After news spread about the house search warrant, officers believe Jackson fled and is now on the run.
On Wednesday, Hayward police requested the public's help in finding Mason. Officers said family members informed the police that Mason was last seen in February.
Merced police and Hayward police are working together to identify the body and determine a cause of death.
