A San Francisco community group is encouraging residents of the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood to step up and join the effort to end violence in the area.
There’s been a recent increase in gun violence in the district, and Mayor London Breed said she understands residents’ frustrations and fears.
“This community is hurting, and it’s time for us to take that hurt and that pain and turn it into something different,” she said.
Breed was speaking at a neighborhood gathering held Friday in Bayview, hosted by the group Wealth and Disparities in the Black Community.
Members of the San Francisco Police Department were on hand to speak directly with people about their concerns and how officers might work with Bayview residents.
Group Founder Phelicia Jones hopes the community will be able to engage with officers on methods of community policing.
“We will be able to really talk about different strategies on how we can stop the violence,” she told KCBS Radio.
