A beloved California landmark has been destroyed after days of heavy rain brought on by December's winter storms.

A coastal arch at Spooner's Cove in Montaña de Oro State Park in San Luis Obispo County was first reported missing near Christmas Eve. The arch was cherished for generations as an iconic natural wonder.

"I have many fond memories wading across the water and hanging out under there watching the waves crash on the rocks," Instagram user Shane Yee wrote.

"Any of you who've spent time in my area might be heartbroken to learn that Spooner's Cove arch at Montana de Oro State Park has collapsed," another San Luis Obispo local posted to Twitter.

The California State Parks Department told the San Luis Obispo Tribune that the arch was likely knocked down by heavy surf.

"Those arches, they're a natural feature that shows up sometimes," Eric Hjelstrom, chief ranger with the California State Parks Department San Luis Obispo Coast District, told the newspaper. "But the same force that makes them also destroys them, it's just the natural wave action along the coast."
