The weekend festivities were anything but festive for Contra Costa firefighters.
On Sunday night the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to several fires in the county possibly caused by the Fourth of July fireworks.
"Con Fire responded to 48 grass & exterior fires & 5 structure fires across the District last night," The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said on their Twitter page.
Firefighters responded to at least 10 fires burning in the district. According to their twitter, some were definitely started by fireworks, such on on W. 5th St. in Antioch. All occupants self-evacuated.
One of the fires occurred in Martinez on Ross Circle, just west of 680.
But according to officials, this year was a 20% reduction in grass fires and a 40% reduction in structure fires since last year's Independence Day.
"Thanks to all our residents who contributed by NOT using fireworks & reporting fires when they occurred," Contra Costa fire said via Twitter.
