Davis and her family were evacuated from the house at Coe Avenue and Delmas Avenue in the Willow Glen neighborhood, as were "nearby neighbors," according to a statement released by Davis. She was at home with her family at the time the device was discovered by a neighbor just before 8 a.m.
The device – later determined to be explosive with "explosive material in it" – was about six inches long, San Jose Police Spokesperson Christian Camarillo said. "Something like this can obviously cause serious injuries and death."
He declined to further elaborate on the device itself.
It's not known if Davis was the target.
Davis, who fell short in her bid to be San Jose's next mayor in last week's primary election, later attended the San Jose City Council meeting.
"I have to say that I'm seriously disturbed by the fact that someone would threaten harm to me and my family just because I'm an elected official," Davis said in a statement. "This further erodes our democracy and our ability to attract good people to run for public office."
The councilwoman and others were the targets of threats during the campaign, all sent through text and later deemed "not credible," according to Camarillo. The discovery of a suspicious device near Davis' home comes shortly after State Sen. Scott Wiener received an unrelated death threat.
