A fire that burned through Vallejo late Monday damaging about 10 homes is thought to have been ignited by fireworks.
The blaze grew to cover about 10-15 acres during the night but only damaged fence lines and outdoor furniture coverings. The interior of the homes and homeowners themselves were unharmed.
Firefighters believe it was started by errant fireworks. But when responders approached the house neighbors saw the sparks originate from, the driveway was empty and no one was inside. Investigators plan to return at a later time to gather more information.
Affected homeowners were evacuated.
It took crews about 90 minutes to contain the flames.
"It’s just really unexpected," said Malia, who was evacuated from her Vallejo home near Swanzy Court and Del Sur street. "I literally ran down here with my stuff and it was just like, 'What happened?'"
One firefighter was injured during the response, and it was the second time in the last week that Vallejo firefighters had to respond to a brush fire near homes. Last week three homes were damaged in a similar blaze.
"It pays off to try to get ahead of it," said Cliff Cambell, battalion chief with the Vallejo Fire Department. "It (the fire) moves fast, especially when you have multiple homes."
These types of fires are a big concern despite the weather, Cambell added. Even with cooler weather, the dry brush is still an issue with the drought.
