A Fremont teenager who was struck by a car while bicycling on July 4 succumbed to his injuries, according to police.
The 15-year-old boy was struck by an unidentified 23-year-old man's vehicle at the intersection of Hansen Ave. and Dultra Way at 9:30 p.m. on the holiday.
The teenager, who also hasn't been identified, was transported to a nearby trauma center with life-threatening injuries later that night. Police learned earlier this week the boy had died.
"This is an incredibly tragic incident that occurred in our community earlier this month," Fremont Police Chief Kimberley Petersen said in a statement Thursday. "I have two teenagers myself, and I cannot imagine the grief and sorrow this young man’s family is experiencing. On behalf of the Fremont Police Department, I offer our deepest condolences to the young man’s family and friends."
Police said the driver, who’s also a Fremont resident, cooperated with investigators on July 4 and has continued to do so. Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the crash.
The driver isn't believed to be criminally responsible, and police said traffic officers don’t expect to make any arrests. An investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to police.
