Golden Gate National Recreation Area officials said a search in the area of the Marin Headlands off Point Bonita has been suspended, after a man was swept into the water Sunday while scrambling along the bluffs.
The man, who is in his 30s, was with his friends when he went missing at about 2:30 p.m.
National Park Service rangers, California Highway Patrol units, U.S. Coast Guard units and Southern Marin Fire crews have been searching for the San Jose resident.
Officials said at about 6:25 p.m. that the search was suspended due to nighttime conditions and would resume in the morning.
A helicopter and boat were being used in the search, but officials said the high surf made it more difficult.
The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Warning in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday. The agency said there’s an increased danger of large, breaking waves and rip currents.
The NWS is advising Bay Area residents to stay off coastal jetties, never turn their backs to the ocean and keep their eyes on kids and pets.
