Cal Falcons ornithologist Sean Peterson was working at his computer Tuesday morning when he saw on a live stream set up in the Campanile that a bird was perched on the bell tower where Annie liked to sit, Berkeleyside reported.
"Annie is BACK," Cal Falcons wrote in an Instagram post. "We apologize for this emotional roller coaster. This is something we've *never* seen before."
Bird experts were baffled by Annie's mysterious return, as she left her nest during the peak of breeding season, allowing her perch to be open to competition from other female falcons.
Monday, Cal Falcons shared with their large following that they suspected Annie had died or was badly injured. "It's incredibly difficult to say goodbye to Annie," they mourned. "She was a wonderful mother and raised 13 chicks in five broods."
The post received an outpouring of support and anguish as avid Annie and Grinnell fans expressed their sadness at losing Annie.
However, Tuesday, bird lovers were able to rejoice with the news Annie had returned. "She still may face competition from the new birds in the area, but Queen Annie appears to be back," Cal Falcons wrote. "Thanks Annie for giving us hope."
