
A San Rafael woman and her daughter are being treated for major injuries after the woman's roommate attacked them with an ax late Monday.
The incident happened at about 10:20 p.m. Monday in a home in the 500 block of Canal St., San Rafael Police said. The mother, 46, and her 12-year-old daughter were taken to separate hospitals for treatment.
The victims weren’t named. Police identified the suspect as Ermidio Diaz.
Police said the mother suffered major stab wounds and lacerations to her upper body, losing parts of her fingers while trying to shield her daughter and herself during the attack. Her daughter sustained major lacerations to her right eye and the bridge of her nose, along with several wounds to her right arm and lower right abdomen.
The daughter was expected to undergo surgery at Oakland Children's Hospital. Her mother is listed in stable condition at Marin General Hospital.
Diaz was arrested on charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, assault causing great bodily injury, mayhem and child endangerment resulting in great bodily injury. She’s being held without bail.
