The fire was isolated to one apartment.

It was initially thought a watchful neighbor was responsible for the man's rescue, but San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Jonathan Baxter later learned it was actually a man working nearby that spotted the flames and backed his company vehicle up to the building to help the victim using a ladder.

In video of the incident, the victim can be seen hanging out of an exterior window for several minutes as the vehicle is situated and ladder set up.

The helpful man hasn't yet been located or identified.

Fire and thick smoke consumed the same window just seconds after the rescue, as shown in a tweet shared by Baxter. The fire stated when the victim fell asleep holding a lit cigarette, he added.
