Early Friday morning in Oakland a 12-year-old boy was shot.

The incident occurred after someone in his home threw a chair at some thieves trying to steal the catalytic converter from their car, police said.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Rawson Street and Brookdale Avenue in East Oakland at about 3 a.m.

According to police, the person who threw the chair said that they heard a noise outside their home around that time. That person and the boy went outside and saw at least two people trying to steal the catalytic converter.

Catalytic converters are frequently stolen because the parts come off easily and are made of valuable metals, such as platinum. Toyota Prius’ are the most frequently targeted models.

The suspects fired multiple shots at the residents after the chair was thrown. The boy was struck in the foot by a bullet. He has been taken to a hospital to be treated for his injury, police said.

The suspects fled the area in two vehicles, according to police.
