SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A devastating fire last month at an iconic San Francisco sports bar has turned into an all expense paid family vacation.

A pre-dawn fire broke out at the Double Play Sports Bar in the Mission District on Sept. 24 and destroyed the over 113-year-old business – which is located at 16th and Bryant Streets, across from where Seals Stadium used to be, the ballpark where the San Francisco Giants played at decades ago.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Owner Rafael Herndandez said it was devastating to survive the pandemic only to succumb to fire.

As he works to reopen, Hernandez is taking a long overdue trip. Alaska Airlines, as part of their "Gift of Travel" promotion, is flying Hernandez and his wife to Mazatlan, Mexico for an all expenses paid vacation.

"I'm excited because I’ve never been on a trip like that," he told KCBS Radio. "Thank you for everything. I hope everything gets better."

His daughter, Katie, said her dad worked his way up from dishwasher at the restaurant, to buying the business in 2009 and hasn't had a day off since.

"I'm just super thankful for Alaska Airlines for this opportunity for my family, to enjoy something and somewhere they've never been," she said. "It's been a longtime so I'm super excited for him to be able to get out."

The Seattle based airline is also giving the "Gift of Travel" to two other deserving Bay Area families: A domestic violence survivor and a San Jose resident who was forced to close her family business during the pandemic.

"We know that travel is transformative and can be even be life-changing. Yet it can also be costly for many," Alaska Airlines Managing Director of Public Affairs David Tucker said in a release. "That's why we are thrilled to gift vacations to three deserving guests and their families."
