The building that once housed an iconic San Francisco restaurant forced to shutter its doors in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic could have a new eatery as soon as the end of this year.
The National Park Service on Tuesday released a request for proposals to lease the restaurant space overlooking San Francisco’s Lands End, and the agency said it hopes to select a tenant for the former Cliff House location in the middle of 2022. Prospective restaurants have until 4 p.m. on May 17 to submit a proposal.

Cliff House closed at the end of 2020 after 47 years, although the National Park Service has owned the building since 1977. The building is currently hosting a pop-up museum until April, focusing on its history since the location first opened in 1863.
Last year, the National Park Service canceled its 2019 request for qualifications, announcing it was streamlining the process in anticipation of landing a new tenant. About 21,000 square feet of the restaurant space at 1090 Point Lobos Ave. is rentable, according to the listing, and it also includes a cafe at the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center at 680 Point Lobos Ave.
The new restaurant’s lease will last for 20 years, according to the agency. There will not be an option to extend the lease, which the agency hopes will begin late in the summer or early this fall.
