Starting Tuesday, all Alameda County residents 16 and over are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine a few days before statewide expansion set for Thursday.
Last week, Alameda County opened appointments for those living in 12 hard-hit ZIP codes and now, according to its website, its expanding to everyone 16 and up. San Francisco is opening COVID-19 vaccines to eight key ZIP codes but is still keeping a tight lid on all residents over 16.
In Contra Costa County, everyone 16 and older is eligible, no strings attached.
This comes as the state is expecting to see a drop in Johnson & Johnson single-dose supply due to a manufacturing mistake on the East Coast.
Sunday was the last day Cal OES and FEMA were running the show at the big, 6,000 shot a day Oakland Coliseum site.
"For the past eight weeks, this site has been run thanks to the Biden-Harris administration by the federal government and the state government," Cal OES’ Brian May. "All along, this was promised as an eight-week mission. We’ve completed that mission very successfully. FEMA is moving out. The federal government is stepping aside and now it’ll be the state running it with Alameda and Contra Costa counties."
That means people with appointments won't notice a difference.
County officials have been worried about replicating the manpower and shot supply provided by state and federal officials. Meanwhile, Alameda County has become the first in the Bay Area to hit 1 million vaccine doses given.
