Amid an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases, San Francisco is reopening a high-volume test site in South of Market.

The drive-through test site located at Seventh and Brannan St. will reopen on Wednesday and will have the capacity to conduct at least 500 COVID-19 tests a day.

Demand for testing has spiked due to the delta surge. Without the high-volume test site, Dr. Naveena Bobba, deputy director at the San Francisco Health Department, reported that the city’s health care systems are unable to meet that demand.

"We are looking to open up this site in order to really ensure that there is access to testing specifically for close-contact and our own city workers," Bobba told KCBS Radio.

Most of the new COVID-19 cases are among the unvaccinated.

On Monday, Mayor London Breed stressed that San Francisco would already be in a better place if more people got the shot. "When we shut down the city, everyone banned together and did their part to keep each other safe. Now the vaccine is a solution to do just that," she said.

The SoMa test site will be available for everyone, not just San Francisco residents. The tests will be by appointment only, but health insurance is not required to book an appointment.
