State health officials are taking another look at their plan to funnel more vaccines to areas with less access to healthcare after Bay Area legislators called on the plan to include more communities in the region.
The state initially announced that it would send 40% of the state’s vaccine supply to the 400 zip codes most in need.
But when the list was released, only 10 of those zip codes were in the Bay Area, even though the region as a whole includes a sizable portion of the state's neediest residents.
Analysis by the San Francisco Chronicle found that Bay Area residents made up just 2% of people benefiting from the new system, even though the region makes up 20% of the state’s population with many communities in need.
Neighborhoods like East Palo Alto, East San Jose and San Francisco’s Mission District were left off the list despite being hard hit by the pandemic.
The paper reported that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office has met with local lawmakers and is now taking another look at the plan with a promise to make changes within the next day.
