Bay Area leaders want state to reconsider, add more local zip codes to vaccine allocation list

Only 10 Bay Area zip codes made the list of the 400 that will get a major bump in vaccine supply.

Last week, state officials announced that they are going to funnel 40 percent of the vaccine supply into hard-hit areas in order to increase access in hard-hit areas.

But when the state released its priority list, places like Hayward, San Rafael and San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point were nowhere to be found.

In East San Jose, the 95122 zip code has a case rate double that of the rest of Santa Clara County and more than 50 percent higher than the state average, but did not make the list.

California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said the state used the Healthy Places Index to measure socioeconomic status, but other factors were at place.

"It’s a composite of a number of different factors including education, transportation, access to food and health care, housing status.”

He said equity is important even in areas that did not make the cut.

"We of course are working to ensure that all counties, with the supply of vaccine that they receive, target those low target communities in their county."

But that is not enough for Bay Area legislators like San Francisco State Senator Scott Weiner, who plans to ask health officials to reconsider beleaguered areas like East Palo Alto and East San Jose today.

The majority of the 400 zip codes are in Southern California.
