Health officials in Santa Clara County have been forced to cancel thousands of COVID-19 vaccine appointments due to lack of supply.

Officials said the "continuing insufficient" supply they are getting from the state may not improve for a few weeks. "All we need to dramatically expand access to vaccinations is more vaccine, and we are ready and waiting for it," County Executive Jeff Smith said in a statement Thursday.

On Thursday, the county said it notified several thousand Kaiser patients that their vaccine appointments at county sites next week will be canceled.

Kaiser said Friday that 8,700 of its members had their appointments canceled.

The cancellations come as millions of Californians became eligible for COVID-19 vaccines earlier this week. Some counties, like Solano, have opened up eligibility further as they've had trouble filling open appointments.
